If you can, try and catch Julieta Venegas playing at SXSW. She's playing 3/20 at Exodus with Fredalba, an LA based Latin/funk/punk influenced band and LIK, a Mexican rock band recently signed to Columbia. Julieta Venegas is a Mexican female solo artist that's recorded with some really notable people in Europe and used to part of "Tijuana No!" a Tijuana based band that was Muy politico! Anyway, her cd just went platinum in Mexico, she gets a lot of play on NPR here, she's awesome because she plays the accordian, writes her own songs and is crossing over as a mainstream alternative artist by singing in Spanish, she's cool, kooky, a little spooky and oh so talented! Also, the night before, you can catch one of my favorite bands (CALEXICO) playing at Exodus too. Seeing them live should be submitted to your brother as part of your "things to do before i die" list. They're THAT good. They're also playing with "TV on the Radio" some huge hype band that is supposed to be "the next big thing" so good luck! Hope you can see either one of them and have fun and KEEP WASHING YOUR HANDS!

justin dear
go to graduate school
do something other than stew in your own juices

find some fresh or vintage juices to stew in

you seem to be recycling old lines about the media, friendship, creativity...

good lord
do something ELSE.

"my life is a series of conversations"

that's what i am talking about?

if you haven't said that before, haven't you already said almost that?

Ah, c'mon tomatoes (which I like on a toasted slice of sourdough bread, with some mayonaise and black pepper),

I like Justin doing what he does. If it were not for him, I wouldn't know all about the convergence of technology and the human spirit.

In this age of specialization, Justin will be a man to whom others go to for advice and clarity dealing with the role of technology and human interaction.

Don't pay tomatoes any heed Justin, you keep doing what your doing.

Oh right, tomatoes...as if going to graduate school is anything *but* stewing in your own juices.

A generous estimate says that 1 out of every 50,000 known writers -- online or off -- is not recycling old lines about the media, friendship, creativity, etc. We can always turn to Joyce or Garcia Marquez or Shakespeare when we want brilliant originality. But for soap opera, we read blogs, and Justin's is as entertainingly DaysofOurLives-ish as anyone's...maybe more so.

Carry on, Justin dear.

Tomatoes may have a point ...

Justin seems to be living out this phenomenon I was just reading about -- perpetual adolescence.

I have to admire Justin's energy and thirst for new things. He's inspirational in that way. But I think a lot of these meditations on technology and spirit are the meanderings of someone who has never had to fully support himself, enjoying the generosity of his mom (who bought him his house, his car, etc.) and perhaps others. So, I guess what I'm getting at is that Justin's pioneering lifestyle is of limited relevance to people who do not have these safety nets.

Perhaps Justin's message does not change, because he has not been forced to change by the forces that affect the rest of us -- getting older, having full-time jobs, having to settle down into a career, paying bills, etc.

I couldn't finish that Weekly Standard article past the part where the author says that the popularity of comics and animation is symptomatic of the audience's unwillingness "to detach themselves from their adolescence." Of course, that's because I study comics and animation and know that the media are capable of very sophisticated forms of communication.

Some might argue that grad school is only another form of perpertual adolescence. As someone who has been in grad school for the past few years, and still has a few more to go before getting a "real job," I'm not in much of a position to argue.

Still, I wouldn't call it "stewing in your own juices." I guess it depends on the program, though...

I only just stumbled across your orkut page the other day, by accident as I was reading "barcelona travellers" and some guy was asking about renting apartments in Barcelona. Then out of bordem, I started scanning his friends, and saw Justin. Something about his picture lured me in, and now here I am , reading his blogs. Weird how it all works out.
