biblio

Richard D. Altick, The English Common Reader: a social history of the mass reading public 1800-1900, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1957

Warren Chappell, Short History of the Printed Word, Knopf, New York, 1970

Marc Demarest, Controlling Dissemination Mechanisms: The Unstamped Press and the 'Net, http://www.hevanet.com/demarest/marc/unstamped.html

it is a fine article, and his bibliography directly fed mine.

Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin, The Coming of the Book, NLB, London, 1976

T. J. Jackson Lears, Fables of Abundance: a cultural history of advertising in America, Basic Books, New York, 1994

C.B.F. Walker, Cuneiform, University of California Press/British Museum, Berkeley, 1988

I used alta vista for most of my searches, and yahoo for some others

from Jones Telecommunications and multimedia encyclopaedia: Printing History and Development; I used a few of their drop in links.

I didn't use the media history project, but it seemed appropriate, promising for inclusion.

I never did get around to reading The Gutenberg Elegies, by Sven Birkerts, either.
