Congrats on the new digs Justin! If you have to live in LA, Venice is the way to go. Beach, freaks, good eats-Venice has it all! When is the housewarming party?

Welcome to Venice, dude. I love it here.

How 'bout up in one of those canyons that run between the 101 and Malibu? Saw some neat little hangouts in there last time I was out. Not sure what the rent would be like though. Any LA folks have an idea?

An assload, that's how much.

Hah! That's about what I saw. I had a vision for myself coming to LA and finding some kind of dilapidated dowager mansion in the hills you described Eric - overgrown with strange things growing from a cracked swimming pool. I'd take it over, invite my friends, and gradually nurse it back to health.

But I could only afford something like an outhouse in that area I believe; I'm aiming more for two bedrooms. The market crushed my dreams, or rather, I've had a chance to downsize them to fit my wallet. And there are some wonderful places still, for me. Besides, Echo Park is much closer to school than the fantasy land in the hills.

for LA living, i think it's important to live NEAR where your daily activities will generally be. when i lived in SM, I commuted to the valley and downtown LA every day. it was hell. the commute cannot be explained unless you've done it...for years. it's enough to drive someone mad or make them full on stoners (something's gotta ease the pain).

if you've ever driven on the PCH from SM, through the Pac Palisades to Malibu, you will see mobile homes. those MOBILE HOMES are now valued at a cool million. so fuggedaboutit.

topanga canyon is tits. a great place for our older years! echo park is the real deal. good luck with your offer and welcome to sunny socal, hell-ay, and la la land! can't wait to see the new digs.

Venice? Visit Dean Chamberlain (www.deanchamberlain.com) at his Light Space Gallery on 1732 Abbot Kinney Blvd.

Try the Brewery... art lofty type whatnot. Many burner tribes are head quartered there... the infamous Theory Labs for example. It ooozes with weirdness and the smell of fresh baked pie.

It's an old Pabst (I think) brewery snuggled at the 5 & 10.

Malibu trail parks rock! My brother lived in one for 2 years, it was directly across from the beach where Baywatch was filmed. How LA is that?

Plus he could hear the waves crashing while in bed at night...cool.

The other residents were mostly artist folks...who drove BMWs so the place is $$.

Welcome to LA Justin! I've been checking links.net for several years, it'll be interesting to see what you have to say about this place. Can't be stranger than Ahkibara. Must be cheaper than Marin. I'm over on Walgrove Ave. if you have any local questions.

Try for the 'untraditional' neighborhoods. I'm living in West Adams (www.historicwestadams.com). There are still plenty of reasonable (read gentrifying) places left if you're willing to live outside of the Westside, B'Hills or the H'Wood Hills . . .

L-I-N-C-O-L-N H-E-I-G-H-T-S!
(But steer away from that Brewery spot...it's been infiltrated by Lawyers and BMWs) Panoramic hilltop views, our own subway stop (well...the Gold Line), minutes from downtown and a walk to Chinatown, plus the best 24 hour food in LA.
YO HEART LINCOLN HEIGHTS.

Didn't Melissa live in Santa Monica? Maybe she'd trade you a place to crash for easing her headaches.

p.s. on second thought, the boat sounds pretty good.

welcome to LA! I'd love to catch up. I still have a shot of you on my DP reel! no--not THAT shot. I'd like to invite you to a screening of Control Room this Monday--please email me.

FYI

(a friend’s sublet in Los Feliz)

her email: haiku_moon@yahoo.com

I will be going to Peru to work, so I need to sublease
my unit from JULY 1st to NOVEMBER 1st. The dates are
flexible - if you need to stay a month over I can work
it out. The large single is in a great location,
close to all the prime spots...walking distance from
Los Feliz Village, Griffith Park, and Silver Lake, yet
very quiet and peaceful. The courtyard apartment has
only 14 other units and great neighbors. Please email
me for further details and/or pictures. Please let me
know ASAP and please spread the word!

Good luck on finding a place!

For my own selfish sake, I hope it's close to my 'hood!

Please please please don't move to Echo Park...whatever you do. It's horrible. Just mvoed away from there home to San Fran. There's so much crime and you can't sleep a wink due to fluttering ghetto birds, I lived on Glendale blvd. by the lake...it was the biggest nightmare. Please re-think, and stay on the west side.

Those who make their peace with Southern California and really understand LA, know, "there is no life east of Lincoln!" You can fly to Brazil (on Friday), Firenze, Papua New Guinea and never drive east of Lincoln.

commentson 15 June 2004 : 15:37, Ghetto Bird sez:

Wow, you can never go east of Lincoln and avoid seeing all of those horrible poor people or those awful brown or black folks.

Also if you ever move to New York, don't even consider anywhere other than Manhattan, and I don't have to tell a Chicagoan like yourself about how Lincoln Park is the only place worth living there.
