But Winfrey also spread more than inspiration Friday. On her way out the door, she bowled over Joan Hall, a founder of the charter school, by quietly handing her a $250,000 check.
Now that is what I call a visit! Great for Joan, great for Oprah!

Yes! My Mom was astonished. In the best possible way!

great for Oprah's ratings!

(yes, yes good for the school too... of course... but better if rich people paid real taxes...)

Kurt,

Your cynicism isnt appreciated. I am hoping for that $250,000 check, too for my "charter" organization. So what if she is rich and worked her ass off to get there? So what if she gets tax breaks? The rich still pay the MAJORITY of the taxes.

So if you want to give me a check for that amount and pay higher taxes, I will glady accept.

Buu-yah!

[no offense, nothing personal, just a comment]

To Joao:

I don't understand what wanting a check has to do with the rich not paying taxes, but whatever. The rich don't pay a fair amount in taxes, that I believe. Please don't flame me for my educated economic opinion.

I think the RICH also don't pay enough in TAXES but you got my point right? He said something contrived and not relating to OPRAH. How much do you think she pays in taxes, how many people does she hire, how many black women does she empower?

I never flame people and actually I don't even know what that really means?? I thought it was related to stalking on newsgroups by TROLLS.

Peace be with you brother and yes let's raise taxes on the rich!

Jo:

I am a realist, Mr. Boo-yah. And your precious holy indignation isn't appreciated.

(FYI, I've read Justin regularly since 1995. I think he is a good and creative person, and he deserves credit for pioneering a lot of the better aspects of Web culture. Read carefully, now: I *like* him. He frustrates me sometimes, though, for a real lack of critical depth. A sort of gauzy hippy denial of evil. I am not going to stuff that frustration in a box for you Jo. Sorry. Deal with me, and I'll deal with your romanticism. Somehow.)

Cause -> Effect.

Kurt, This is my last message because obviously YOU have gone off the DEEP END, and must be more IN DEPTH than me or Justin.

What are you talking about? You talked about the rich paying taxes and now you are flaunting that "I have followed Justin since 1995" what does that have to do with commenting on Oprah Winfrey's donaction to a school?

Stay on topic:

What are you talking about? Romanticism is commenting on " I like him and he is a hippy" REALISM is picking up a tool, fashioning something out of bamboo and trying to make a better life for yourself.

I invite you to come to Brazil, to our farm, and to work with us. Let's see what your comments will be, under the hot sun, and the romanticism of sustainable development.

If any of you liberals respond to the "poor little mozambiquian" asking for money, I think I'm going to puke. Where do you get that the rich don't pay taxes? When was the last time you looked at how much of the tax base is made up by the wealthy. Enjoy the free ride

And while we're on the topic of what is and isn't a hypocritical pile of crap(oprah), is a "single sex charter school" constitutional? For some reason I thought the contrary. Why is it that she felt that she should only help little girls with math and science? do they need more help than boys? Is this person asserting that girls are less adept at math or science than boys? That doesn't sound fair to me. Sounds like affirmative action all over again
